Going to the Mountains

I love the mountains... that's all there is to it. There's a John Muir quote~ "Going to the Mountains is Going Home..." and that pretty much sums it up for me. I just feel better when I'm in the mountains. Where I'm living now, it's flat... completely flat. So, having finished my work week... I headed out early Saturday morning for a 3 hour drive up to Ruidoso & the Sacramento Mountains. I had driven through there on my way to my new job, & knew I'd get back up for some hiking the first chance I got. My friend from Santa Fe was kind enough to meet me there. That's him way ahead of me on the trail... he lives at 7,000 ft... while me, somewhere around 4,000. Our hike started around 9,600, so needless to say... I could feel my heart pounding in my chest while he floated effortlessly up the trail.

There is so much beauty to be found in the mountains~

We caught the tail end of the wild flowers blooming...

Lots of Ladybugs...

And who doesn't like Lichen?

My friend on one of the peaks...

The surrounding mountains shrouded in mist...

And the view looking west... that's White Sands & the Organ Mountains far off in the distance...

I'm now off the mountain & back to the plains... & already looking forward to next weekend!

I've never seen so many ladybugs in one place! Your misty mountain photos are beautiful, Becky!

Beautiful photos, Becky. Everything is so green! We are just starting to green up here in the desert with all the July monsoon rain, yet the photos I took up in the Organs a couple of days ago show a much, much drier place than the mountains where you were hiking. I'll be posting them on the blog later this week.

When we first moved to Clovis I kept thinking, "no mountains, no rivers, no lakes," but after a while I stopped seeing the place less in negative terms about what was missing and more in positive terms about what was there. First and foremost, there is the sky and the clouds and some gorgeous sunrises and sunsets; after that you start noticing every detail in that flat landscape. It will be interesting to hear about the evolution of your way of seeing there.

Hi Becky,
I'm having my morning coffee with you! (Here in my mountains.) Some places become ingrained in your spirit. Whenever I'm away from the mountains, I enjoy the other special scenery of a place, but my heart does seem to expand when I see the peaks once again. That Lichen might lend itself to one of your art projects! I would love to see a lady bug swarm - sometimes they swarm here in CO in the fall. Stay well, Becky, and enjoy your time in NM.

No problem with altitude sickness besides heart pounding fast? I get headaches and loss of breath.

Your photos are gorgeous. I love the wildflowers!
