Extended Blog Break~

Hi!
It's me... just wanted to say hello  & let you know I have just been taking a bit of a blog break due to life circumstances. If you'd like to know why... read on!

It has been a crazy, busy time since I arrived back in Santa Fe on Aug 5th & I've been working pretty solid ever since. I spent my first week here working like crazy, living out of a motel room & looking at places on my lunch break & after work. (I had given up my apt when I went home for the summer in an effort to save money... thinking again I'd have no problem finding an inexpensive little rental once I got back into town, ha ha.) In hindsight, I wish I'd have kept that little apt.... but hindsight is always 20-20, is it not? At any rate, I did find another little apt that seemed like it would work & was in my price range... but it had a one year lease. Now, I typically don't do leases, because you never know how the place is going be until you actually move in... but  living out of a "cheap"motel & working overtime at stressful job I was desperate! So I signed. Yup, complete with the clause that should I break the lease, I would have to pay rent until it was re-leased, plus a $ 500 re-leasing fee. Yikes. Anyhow, I signed, moved all my things from storage, box by box in my little corolla, set up my air mattress & begun unpacking.

That is when I found out how noisy the place was. Are any of you out there "noise sensitive?" I totally am. I like to come home to peace & quiet... it is essential to my well being! I explained this sensitivity to the rental company-  and she assured me it was a QUIET complex. What she did not point out was that the complex across from mine is a complex that has a play ground full of screaming kids (and sometimes screaming adults!) Don't get me wrong- I don't have a problem w/ kids, but... it's that ear piercing screaming that you usually hear from an unattended child in Walmart that drives me nuts. It's like nails on the chalk board of my soul! This was not apparent during the day time when I looked at the place... but it usually goes on during my prime relaxation & decompression hours after work~ from 5 pm til 9 pm. Despite closing my windows (which bothers me as I love that fresh Santa Fe air) & turning on the swamp cooler... I can still hear it. It does have it's moments of quiet- usually in the mornings when I am off to work. The walls are also paper thin, so I hear my neighbors when they come home late at night (it sounds like they are moving furniture in the room next to my bedroom!) Last night, after being woken by this noise from a peaceful slumber at midnight, I moved my air mattress to the living room, put in my ear plugs & turned on the swamp cooler. That is when I realized, 10 days after I moved in... I just can't do it! I will lose money & perhaps defeat the purpose of finding the "inexpensive rental," but there is absolutely no way I can stay here! A hard working girl needs peace at the end of the day. Period. So, as of tomorrow, I'll be back to looking for a new place, & hoping the finding of a new place coincides with the timeframe of someone renting this one... I really can't afford to pay rent on 2 places!

Yeah, so that is what I have been up to. Very frustrating really, and quite exhausting! I just want a simple, safe, quiet home to live in that is relatively inexpensive so that I can focus on taking classes~ (which start next week by the way!) And for some reason, I don't think it's too much to ask... but it seems quite difficult to find! I do get tempted during times like this to just pack it up & head back to be closer to family & some sort of support system, but I am really here for the clay, and I am determined to a finish at least one more semester of clay classes! Well, wish me luck. I have a feeling the next few weeks will be just as busy as when I arrived 2 weeks ago, and I seem to be having issues w/ an inconsistent internet connection currently~ but I look forward to catching up with all of you once I get truly settled.

This is such a hard issue. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with it, but I don't know how you can find this stuff out ahead of time. We love our house and the view of the mountains, but our neighbor has gotten a dog who is left outside all the time in a small pen and--you guessed it--he barks incessantly. I feel sorry for the dog but I don't think I can do anything about his awful life, and he keeps me awake at night.

I hope you find a better place so you can concentrate on the things that are important to you. Keep an eye out for tied-up and penned-in dogs when you are looking! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, Becky.

It breaks my heart to read this.
Feeling so akin with a tremendous sensitivity to noise and smells, I know what you are going through. My self defence system is ear defenders: small cylinders of foam that you stuff inside your ears. Can't live without them and feel like a smoker fumbling for cigarettes when I go through pockets to find a pair. I buy them by the gross.

I've put in a request to the heavely powers-that-be to grant you an overdue lucky break :-)

Becky, it seems to me that you can get out of that lease because they told you it was quiet and it isn't!
Also one thing will chnage soon, the kids playing outside, it will be too dark for them to do that in about a month. I hate noise too and I am sorry that you have had such a terrible time finding your
place. xoxo

I am so sorry to hear this Becky but you are in the same boat we're in. Our neighbors make noise all night long with loud music, motorcycle engines racing, or loud drunken parties. Not to mention the sister in law does drugs and she's bring strange people around or fighting with people. We are trying to buy a home but have had the worst time with the realtors in this city. I am like you and I have to have quite to sleep in or I am up all night which is usually the case. Classes starts tomorrow and this time I got lucky. My boss is letting me take the class in the afternoon. Granted I have to make up the time but it should be fine. I hope you find something soon and if I hear of anything I will let you know. Don't lose hope, there will be something out there for you.

Oh! Oh! this does not sound good! You'll probably get lots of sympathy from us but you'll need to solve your problems fairly quickly. Don't do anything rash, tho. I think that a discussion with the rental company is the first order of business. Does SF have an agency that deals with renters complaints...try to find out. Also try to discover if there is a group that gives legal assistance. Most cities have some kind of agencies that help with renters problems and legal work. After you explore those issues, you need to plan further action. Above all...do not despair...ALL problems can be solved or come to some resolution. It is always amazing what you can do with more creative thinking and help from friends and supporters. Anyone out there who can help Becky? Give her a hand!

I couldn't take it either. Get out of there if you can. I have new neighbor's with 5 dogs. My peace is gone too. Wish I could move.

oh, the dickens. I've been there done that so many times. where I currently live the neighbors have a dog but I've gotten to know her and that makes a huge difference in how I feel about her barking. she's a beagle - any sound sets her off in that yowl/yelp mode. renting is always a challenge, but hey, if you purchased a home and the neighbors were undesirable, that's even worse!!! I'm hoping this will all settle down for you and you'll find something that suits your lifestyle needs. it's out there. put out feelers, the best places are usually found word-of-mouth. someone will know someone who knows someone who's moving out of a fantastic set-up. yep, it's gonna happen. hang in there Becky!

Good luck, Becky. Did you think of looking into house sitting for awhile? That usually happens in a neighborhood you don't have to worry about. From all that you do, I would say you come across as a very responsible person.

Yikes! I hope you find someplace new soon AND that the other place is rented fast! I can understand you wanting peace and quiet! Good luck!

Good luck with your wheel class. Are you only taking one this semester. It's only week one and I am already exhausted. I have lots of home work but there's only 15 weeks to go! Have fun tomorrow. Oh and as for our neighbors, someone around us is always calling the cops on them. It's been quite since the cops were there twice on Saturday. Someone must have been arrested.

Becky, I was thinking about you and wondering why you haven't posted for awhile. (I, too, haven't been on-line much.) What a dilemma, but you have to get away from that stressful situation. I could not stand constant noise and turmoil - I can fully relate. Would your workplace offer any suggestions for rentals? Where are the dogs? Keeping my fingers crossed for you. (Our rental situation here in Summit is similar - too many people and not enough affordable housing.)

Becky,
I am glad to hear how you are doing.
Sorry that you are experiencing such stress. I know what you mean about little kid screaming. It bugs me more the older i get.
I know you will work your way through this problem like you do others
I love you
Dad
