Chaco Culture

Hi y'all. Just wanted to share a few pics of my recent visit to Chaco Culture. My family has been in town & we have been doing all the touristy things to do in Santa Fe... walk the plaza, go out for local cuisine, visit Taos, Chimayo, Tent Rocks & so forth. We had a really nice visit, & kept quite busy! After Mom & gram's left, my nephew stayed with me another 4 days and we embarked on a more strenuous routine- hiking high in the local mountains, & a long days drive out to Chaco to hike & explore. If you have never been, I highly recommend it. It was my second visit there, and I'll certainly visit again in the future- so much to see & experience,it is impossible to take it all in in one day! I took a ton of photos, but tried to narrow it down to just a few of my favorites to share.
(click on any photo for greater detail~ the top 2 are my faves.)

Chaco is a most amazing place~ I wouldn't do it justice by trying tell you all about it,
so for lots of great info~ click on the National Park website here:
There are wonderful links on the history & people of Chaco Culture, and anything you may need to know about planning a visit.

(just a side note~ I was completely "blog-free" during my family's visit... and I have to admit, I found it quite refreshing! I'll still be posting here & there, but I imagine it will be a bit less with my now hectic work schedule & upcoming life events. though fun, blogging does tend to take up a fair amount of time, does it not? i'll still visit when I can, though likely not as often. wishing you all a wonderful summer!)

I visited Chaco many years ago. The beauty, the history, the culture are all still in my heart. I could spend days in there!

I've never been there during my visits to N.M. but it's going on my list. the detail in those photos when enlarged is amazing. they're truly gorgeous. I have to agree with you about the time blogging takes. I take my breaks from occasionally. and though I'll miss your frequent posts, I understand. I love your new header image. have a great weekend.

The photo of your nephew above the Kin Kletso ruins takes my breath away! I've never been to Chaco - what intricate stonework. Becky, have a great blog break - have a bit of fun amid all your work. PS I visited Powell's when in Portland. Can you believe I didn't buy anything?

beautiful as can be, love the feeling of time before.
I remember a wonderful visit to Santa Fe. I loved the land, old dwellings, art, food, the salsas, and the margaritas, ummmm.

When you do a little blogging, can you tell us about that new header photo? The shapes look like pots, but I'm betting that they aren't.

Enjoy your summer, Becky! Love these photos, must go to Chaco.

Hi Clair,
Oh, I think you would absolutely love Chaco- though I'd recommend spring or fall- it's getting quite warm out there & there aren't many shaded areas to escape the sun! The the header photo was taken there along the cliff walls, I believe they are the nests of the Cliff Swallow. They do look like pots, don't they? I watched a video on how they build their nests- really interesting... they are functional potters! gives me a few ideas for a new clay project...

Lucky you. I have not been here yet. How long does it take to get there? The photos are amazing but it must be really something to see it in person. So happy to see your new post and will be happy to see when you have the chance. Have a wonderful week!

Becky, fantastic photos!! And the place is amazing!!How wonderful in olden days people built such magnificent brick buildings. I feel power and sprituarity in the ruins. They are treasure to be passed down to future people.
Have a great day!

Hi Becky! glad you got to see Chaco! I was there in the 1980's and the images are still sharp with me. Isn't it an amazing place? Hope you get to Bandelier, too. I'll be in SF for three weeks in Aug/Sept so perhaps you, Randy and I can meet during that time period...I know that you've had lots of guests already, but this would just be a blogger visit!!

Becky, I have been taking a bit of a blog break myself, can't you tell :-). I once spent the night in Chaco, under a sky filled with stars. I hope they fixed the road going in, years ago it was just washboard! Lovely photos! xoxo

What a magical place! Thanks for sharing those gorgeous photos. I definitely want to come back to explore the canyon myself someday.

A while back, after I posted something about my love of spirals, you sent me a link to The Solstice Project. :0) Last week, I was finally able to watch their film, "The Mystery of Chaco Canyon" on PBS. I am in complete awe of everything about the canyon and the amazing people who built those structures. Thanks again for that link!
